 Brief introduction: The herb Semen Oroxyli is the dried ripe seed of Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz., used to clear the lung of heat, and soothe the throat for the treatment of cough, sore throat, and hoarseness of voice in cases of wind-heat afflictions.

 Botanical source: The herb Semen Oroxyli (Trumpetflower Seed) is the dried ripe seed of Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz., it is a plant of Oroxylum. Genus, the Bignoniaceae family (bignonia, catalpa, trumpet creeper family) of the Scrophulariales order. It is also known as Trumetflower Seed, Seed of Trumetflower or Mù Hú Dié.

 a fruiting tree of Oroxylum indicum L. Vent,with three pendulous pods Botanical description: Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz is also known as Bignonia indica L. Small trees, the tree grows up to 7~12 meters tall. The bark is thick and has lenticels. Branchlets have numerous lenticels and are protuberant, and the leaf mark is conspicuous and big. Leaves are opposite; large imparipinnate to quadripinnate compound leaf, insert near the apex of the stem and branch, 60–160 cm long, 20–80 cm wide; leaflets are numerous, petiolules are 5~10 mm long, the leaflet is triangular-ovate, 6–14 cm long, 4~9 cm wide, the apex is short and acuminate, the base is rounded or broadly cuneate and deflective, entire, the upper surface is green, the undersurface is light green, both surfaces are glabrous, blueing when it is dried.

 Cyme-botrys are terminal, 40–150 cm long; pedicels are about 7 cm long; calyx is campanulate (bell-shaped), 2.2~4.5 cm long, 2~3 cm wide, purple, the apex is truncated, persistent; corolla is salmon (reddish orange), succulent, 3~9 cm long, campanulate (bell-shaped), 5~8.5 cm in diameter, the apex is 5-lobed, lobes differ in size; 5 stamens, insert in the middle of corolla tube, stretching out of the corolla; filament base is woolly (tomentose), 1 filament is shorter; floral disc (flower disc) is big, succulent; styles are 5~7 cm long, stigma is 2-lobed.

 Capsularfruit is ligneous (woody), flat, broadly linear, pendulous, 40–120 cm long, 5~8.5 cm wide, the apex is mucronate, the base is cuneate, the margin is slightly introflexed (curved inward), with a slightly protruding slit in the middle of the back surface, yellowish brown at maturity, opening along the ventral line, and the carpel has a midrib. Many seeds, a seed with a wing is 6~7.5 cm long, and 3.5~4 cm wide, except for the base, all surrounded by white, translucent, thin wings. Its flowering period is from July to October, and the fruiting period is from October to December.

Resource distribution: The tree is mainly distributed in the Zhujiang River area, the southwest area, Taiwan, and other areas of China.

 Characters of herbs: The seeds are nearly elliptical, flaky, 2~3 cm long, and 1.5~2 cm wide. The surface is light yellowish white, with spun filiform luster (tiffany-like luster). The seed coat expands outward from three sides into a wide, big wing, which is about 2.5 cm wide, membranous and translucent, with radial texture, and the edges are mostly broken. The herb is light, when seed coat is peeled, one can see that membranous endosperm tightly wraps the cotyledon. Two cotyledons, flat papilionaceous (butterfly-shaped), yellow-green or light yellow, major diameter is about 1.5 cm and the short diameter is about 1 cm; the radicle is conspicuous. The herb has a slight smell, and it tastes slightly bitter. The herb of a better grade is wide, white, and has filiform, glossy, and soft wings.

 Pharmacological actions: ①.anti-inflammatory; ②.anti-allergic reaction; ③.diuresis effect; ④.choleretic effect; ⑤.cholesterol-lowering effect.

 Medicinal efficacy: Clearing away the lung-heat and relieve sore throat, dispersing stagnated liver Qi for regulating stomach. Indicated for a cough with lung heat, pharyngitis (throat obstruction), hoarseness, Qi pain in liver and stomach (stomachache due to emotional depression and the hyperactive liver-Qi attacking the stomach).
