 In ancient classical works Nei Jing (the Inner Canon), it is recorded as zhì xià (stagnation in the lower), or cháng pǐ (spouting bleeding from anus). The ancient classical works Nei Jing (the Inner Canon) recorded various syndromes of cháng pǐ (spouting bleeding from anus).

 Internal reasons: improper diet, raw, cold, or greasy food stagnant inside, damp-steaming leading to heat-stagnation, inappropriate diet, exogenous pathogens wind, cold, summer heat and dampness.

 External symptoms: passing down pus, or blood, or purulent matter (pus and blood), or stool with thick mucus, or without dregs, or mixed with dregs; there is a difference of pain, painless, great pain, but all observed rectal tenesmus.

 Common and various dysentery syndromes are introduced:

 Qi-stagnation dysentery: the Qi-stagnation dysentery is also known as qì zhì lì, chaos of seven emotions leads to stagnation of Qi circulation, retentions stagnant in the intestine, serious contracture, and uncomfortableness in the chest.

 Dyspeptic dysentery: the dyspeptic dysentery is also known as shí jī lì, or dysentery of dyspepsia, take too much diet and drink; lose transformation of spleen and stomach, imbalance of raw and cold food, develops to dampness and heat. The dysentery is yellow, or similar to fish brain, with pain in the abdomen and distension, not addicted to diet and drink.

 Epidemic dysentery: the epidemic dysentery is also known as shí yì lì, a variety of dysentery that becomes epidemic, also known as epidemic dysentery, it transmits in generations.

 Blood-stasis dysentery: the blood-stasis dysentery is also known as yū xuě lì, dysentery of stagnant blood; it is caused by quick walk after satiation, injury from falling down, depression and anger cannot be relieved, and women mistakenly take raw and cold food after menses or childbirth, not circulation of extravesated blood, stagnate inside, affect the intestines and develops to dysentery, passing down purple black blood.

 Food-denial dysentery: the food-denial dysentery is a severe case of dysentery with utter loss of appetite and vomiting upon eating and drinking. It is also known as jìn kǒu lì. Dysentery, but could not take food, weakness of stomach.

 Intermittent dysentery: the intermittent dysentery is a dysentery occurring at intervals, relieved frequently but dysentery again frequently, cannot get relieved over a year, it is also known as xiū xi lì, the reasons vary: pathogenic cold accumulation in the bottom region of the large intestine, and heat accumulation, etc.

 Chronic deficient dysentery: the chronic deficient dysentery is also known as xū huá lì, the reasons vary, lavishly work, the spleen and stomach are hurt and turn weak, tiredness in arms and legs, indigestion of food, dregs pass down with dysentery, slightly pain in abdomen, or one suffers from dysentery for a long period and could not get relieved, later it develops to chronic deficient dysentery.

 Yin-deficiency dysentery: the Yin-deficiency dysentery is one suffers from Yin deficiency, occasionally affected by pathogenic cold, pain in abdomen and has dysentery, rectal tenesmus, reddish and whitish, thick and turbid, or observed red water discharge, fever turns severe at night, polydipsia (excessive thirst) and uneasy, seemingly hungry in chest, turns distension after taking diet. It is also known as yīn xū lì.

 Cold dysentery: cold-dysentery is a kind of dysentery mainly due to cold pathogen hosted in large intestines, weakness and deficiency of stomach and intestines, and affected by the cold pathogen, normally the diarrhea color blue or white or black, etc.

 Deficiency-cold dysentery: chronic dysentery due to deficiency-cold of the spleen and kidney, characterized by passage of thin mucous stools accompanied by dull pain in the lower abdomen, poor appetite, lassitude, coolness of the limbs, weakness of the loins, and aversion to cold. It is also known as xū hán lì.

 Cold-damp dysentery: the cold-damp dysentery is a type of dysentery characterized by passage of whitish, thin mucoid stools, absence of fever and thirst, distending distress of the epigastrium and dull pain in the abdomen, tenesmus, poor appetite, pale tongue with whitish coating, and slow pulse. It is also known as hán shī lì.

 Damp-heat dysentery: the damp-heat dysentery is a type of dysentery with frequent bloody mucoid stools, tenesmus, and burning sensation in the anus. It is also known as shī rè lì.

 Heat dysentery: the heat-dysentery is a kind of dysentery mainly due to the affection of heat pathogen accumulated in the stomach. It is also known as pyretic dysentery. Its main symptoms observed normally are tenesmus(a contraction of the genital organ), body heat and abdominal pain, polydipsia and drink water(drink due to vexation and thirst), prefer to cold and aversion to heat, urine hot and red, dysentery color red, or looks similar as the fish brain, thick sticky and dirty, pulse manifestation rapid slippery and strong, tongue coating yellow and greasy, etc.

 Threadworm dysentery: weakness of the stomach, and deficiency of the intestine, threadworm crawls downward, or it pains, or is itchy, the parasite comes out of the anus with dysentery, it is also known as náo chóng lì.

 Worm chronic dysentery: the dregs pass down are blackish, looks like chicken liver, have dryness of mouth and extreme thirst, and cause cutting pain inside, it is also known as chóng zhù lì.
