Dryness syndrome:introduction of its pathological reasons, common syndromes and various syndromes.
✵Dryness diseases:The dryness syndrome is a kind of syndrome that causes exhaustion of body fluid, insufficiency and lack of blood, and obstruction of Qi and blood, and one feels dryness of body; it is also known as zào zhèng (dryness disease or dryness syndrome) or shāng zào zhèng (hurting from dryness syndrome).
Dryness syndrome.
The dryness syndrome is a kind of syndrome that causes exhaustion of body fluid, insufficiency and lack of blood, and obstruction of Qi and blood, and one feels dryness of body; it is also known as zào zhèng (dryness disease or dryness syndrome) or shāng zào zhèng (hurting from dryness syndrome).
The ancient classical works Su Wen (the Inner Canon:the Plain Questions) recorded, "the domination of dryness brings drying of body fluid," and it also recorded, "All obstruction and dryness, dryness of skin, no looseness of the skin, and wrinkles, all belong to dryness."
Internal reasons: the dryness disease, mainly due to excess of Yang and deficiency of Yin, exhaustion and dryness of blood and body fluid; the reasons vary, including excessive fire, generation of wind, pathogenic wind and fire stir up each other, prevailing over dampness and hurting body fluid; withering from reduction of Qi or lacking of blood, or sudden loss of body fluid from emetic method or purgative method, or stomach hurt from hunger and overstrain; or exhaustion of mind from thinking and worrying, exhaustion of heart blood; or excessive sexual strain; or taking too much rich fatty diet (greasy and surfeit flavor), etc.
Exogenous reasons: there are exogenous pathogenic factors, such as long days of fine weather in autumn, affection from accumulation of wind and heat.
External symptoms: in general, external symptoms are including dryness of skin, no looseness of the skin, and wrinkles, parched and dryness in throat and nose, polydipsia (morbid thirst), constipation (difficulty in defecation), or pain in the left hypochondrium, could not change one's position (cannot turn around), dry sensation in pharynx, dusty complexion, emaciation, heat on the outside surface of feet, lumbago (back pain), scared, spasm of muscle, pain in the lower abdomen of woman, sores, etc.
Pathological process and deterioration: the dryness syndrome might develop to other serious syndromes, such as consumptive thirst, dysphagia (yē gé), flaccid paralysis (wěi bì), menoschesis, etc.
Complications of dryness syndromes: the dryness syndromes normally lead to other syndromes, including dry throat, dryness of the nasal cavity, anemogenous constipation (dry feces and large intestinal retention of dry stool), chapped skin, bleeding out of skin and itching, dryness of the stomach and intestines, etc.
There are various dryness syndromes: heat-dryness syndrome, wind-dryness syndrome, fire-dryness syndrome, dryness syndrome of Qi and blood deficiency type, tendon dryness syndrome, lung dryness syndrome, dryness thirst syndrome, autumn dryness syndrome, etc. These dryness syndromes are introduced:
Heat-dryness syndrome.
Heat-dryness syndrome: the heat-dryness syndrome is also known as rè zào, or rè zào zhèng. Pathogenic heat transformed from dryness, and affection in the interior, exhausts body fluid and leads to constipation.
Wind-dryness syndrome.
Wind-dryness syndrome: the wind-dryness syndrome is also known as fēng zào, or fēng zào zhèng. Pathogenic wind affection leads to withering of muscle and skin, dryness of body hairs and hair, dry scabies (xeroscabies), withering of hands and feet, many scurf and skin itch (pruitus), bleeding and pains, etc.
Severe condition of heat and wind-dryness syndrome.
Severe condition of heat and wind-dryness syndrome: the heat-dryness and wind-dryness syndrome develops to a severe condition; other symptoms will be observed, such as frequent yawning, spasm of muscles and vessels, often aversion to cold, muscular twitching, and habit spasm. If the pathogenic wind and heat-dryness are stagnant in the interior, it will develop into dysphoria (abnormal depression and discontent), stuffiness, etc.
Dryness syndrome of Qi and blood deficiency type.
Dryness syndrome of Qi and blood deficiency type:In general, the heat-dryness, wind-dryness and fire-dryness syndromes are due to dryness and deficiency of Qi and blood. The dryness syndrome of Qi and blood deficiency type is also known as qì xuě xū zào, or qì xuě xū zào zhèng. The deficiency of Qi and blood leads to pathogenic wind, heat, and fire stirring up each other and gradually develops to flaccid paralysis (wěi bì) or dysphagia (yē gé).
Tendon dryness syndrome.
Tendon dryness syndrome: the tendon dryness syndrome is also known as jīn zào, or jīn zào zhèng. The pathogenic dryness and heat affect the liver; the body fluid cannot moisten tendons, and tendons are drying, which leads to muscular atonia and cannot collect, or flaccid paralysis and numbness, or lockjaw, or convulsive limbs, or dizziness and fainting, or even sudden syncope, etc.
Lung dryness syndrome.
Lung dryness syndrome: the lung dryness syndrome is also known as fèi zào, or fèi zào zhèng. The pathogenic dryness affects the lungs and develops into lung dryness syndrome; the body fluids are exhausted and finally affect the lungs. Ancient classical works Nei Jing (the inner canon) recorded, "The heart transferring pathogenic heat to the lung, develops to gé xiāo (upper consumptive thirst, or upper diabetes)." and also recorded, "...there is disease which one doesn't want to tell others, lacking spermatic fluid of man, or amenorrhea of woman (absence of menstruation), it develops to emaciation due to emotional upset (fēng xiāo), it develops to pulmonary retention (xī bēn)."
Dryness thirst syndrome.
Dryness thirst syndrome: the dryness thirst syndrome is also known as zào kě, or zào kě zhèng. Dryness surely leads to thirst, and the dryness thirst is from various reasons, including addiction to greasy and sweet foods, or sexual intercourse in a drunk state, or overstrain from traveling far distance and affected by severe heat climate, or dryness of stomach, or wind affection, or splenic fever, or nepropyrexia (renal heat), or stagnation of pathogenic heat in the large intestine, or heat stagnation in the small intestine, etc.
Autumn dryness syndrome.
Autumn dryness syndrome: the autumn dryness syndrome is also known as qiū zào, or autumn-dryness disease. The dryness is one of the six climatic factors. In autumn, the dryness is in dominance of the climate; the wood and grass turn yellowing and withering, and affected by the dryness in autumn, one gets the autumn dryness syndrome. The ancient classical works Su Wen (the inner canon:the plain questions) recorded, "One gets injured by pathogenic dryness in autumn, reverse flowing upward and cough, develops to flaccid syncope (wěi jué)."
