 Constipation is infrequent or difficult evacuation of the feces, it is also known as biàn mì, or biàn bì.

 Constipation is a syndrome that belongs to the kidney.

 Internal reasons: the reasons vary, intemperance of taking food, hobby in drinking wines, take much pungent and spicy food, indulgence in sexual activities, etc.

 External symptoms: good appetite in diet and drink, urine is reddish; no appetite, urine is clear; red face and general fever, or aphtha and hobby in cold food and drink; face turns whitish or blackish, or urine is clear, and one prefers heat; indigestion, belching, etc.

 Pathological process: later it develops to drink and food being rejected by vomiting, known as dysphagia, develops to a syndrome that pathogen binding in three Yang.

 There are various constipation syndromes, heat constipation, cold constipation, constipation of excess type, constipation of deficiency type, Qi constipation, wind constipation, etc. These constipation syndromes are introduced.

 Except common constipation syndromes, there are relevant syndromes, including obstruction of feces, splenic constipation, incontinence of feces, prolapse of anus, etc. These constipation syndromes are also introduced.

Common and various constipation syndromes.
 
 Various constipation syndromes, heat constipation, cold constipation, constipation of excess type, constipation of deficiency type, Qi constipation, wind constipation, etc. These constipation syndromes are introduced:

 Constipation of deficiency type: the deficiency constipation is a collective term for various types of constipation related to deficiency conditions, such as deficiency of Qi, Yang or Yin, usually seen in aged or debilitated subjects or postpartum cases. It is also known as xū mì. There are constipation of Yang deficiency, Yang deficiency of the lower; or constipation of Yin deficiency, Yin deficiency of the lower, exhaustion and dryness of essence and blood, the intestines are dry and withering; and an aged or weak person who is insufficient in essence and blood, or a woman who suffers drying and withering of blood and Qi;

 Constipation of excess type:the excess type constipation is a collective term referring to various types of constipation ascribed to pathogenic factors such as heat, cold, stagnant Qi and phlegm. It is also known as shí mì. The excess type of constipation, is due to excess in the stomach, excessive thirst, delirious speech (wild talks), constipated, or having appetite but being constipated. Zhongjing stated that "the pulse is floating and rapid, can take some food but is constipated, this is the excess syndrome, known as Yang Jie, will turn severe till seventeen days."

 Cold constipation: the cold constipation is a type of constipation ascribed to the binding of yin cold in the intestines, it is also known as lěng mì, yin binding (yīn jié), or cold binding (hán jié), manifested by difficulty in passage of feces with abdominal colic, distension, tenderness and cold limbs. The pathogenic cold stagnant and binding in the intestines and stomach, concrete, the circulation of body fluids is obstructed, the stomach Qi is obstructed, lips are pale, normal taste of mouth, tongue coating is white, urine is clear, prefers heat and aversion to cold. Or not thirst, and no appetite, cold in arms and legs, cool in body, obstruction of defecation, feces are hard, etc.

 Heat constipation: the heat constipation is a type of constipation accompanied by fever, flushed face, thirst, abdominal distension, and yellow and dry tongue coating. It is also known as rè mì. The pathogenic heat combats with body fluid, dryness binding in the intestine and stomach, or pathogenic cold transmits to the interior in cold affection syndrome, there are accumulated heat in the intestine and stomach in the past, mostly with such a syndrome. Symptoms observed are red face, general fever, swollen abdomen, often wanting to drink cold water, or boil and oral abscess grows in mouth and tongue, etc.

 Qi constipation: the Qi constipation is a constipation syndrome due to stagnation of Qi, accompanied by frequent eructation, stuffiness in the chest, impaired appetite, and even abdominal pain; Symptoms observed often are stagnation of Qi due to internal obstruction, often belch, obstruction and swelling in the abdomen, distending and swollen in the hypochondria.

Obstruction of feces and splenic constipation.
 
 Obstruction of feces is chronic and severe than constipation, splenic constipation. These syndromes are introduced:

 Obstruction of feces: the obstruction of feces is a syndrome developed from constipation, a constipation syndrome is normally often constipated and difficult to pass feces. But in a syndrome of obstruction of feces, normally one does not defecate over 15 days, obstruction, even distension and fullness in the abdomen and chest, stuffiness in the chest. It is also known as dà biàn bù tōng.

 The reasons for obstruction of feces vary, and the main reasons are: pathogenic heat enters the interior, stercoroma (dry stool) in the stomach, withering of blood and deficiency of Yang, dyspepsia stagnation, wind affection of the stomach and intestine, ascent-descent disorder of Qi, etc.

 Splenic constipation: the splenic constipation is the infrequent passage of dry and hardened feces as a consequence of dysfunction of the spleen. It is also known as pí yuē, or splenoasthenic constipation, or splenoasthenic restriction. The splenic constipation is a syndrome in which body fluid turns dry; Zhongjing discussed it in Yangming syndrome, the stomach is strong, and the spleen is weak, frequent urination, and difficulty in defecation. The splenoasthenic restriction is also a syndrome that can lead to constipation.

Incontinence of feces.
 
 Incontinence of feces is introduced:

 Incontinence of feces: the incontinence of feces is also known as fecal incontinence, or yí shǐ. The feces pass down occasionally and out of self-attention. The pathogenic reasons vary, and the main reasons are weakness and deficiency of stomach and spleen, or pathogenic heat and turns excessive, etc.

Prolapse of anus.
 
 Prolapse of anus is introduced:

 Prolapse of anus: the prolapse of anus is a syndrome that the anus falls off with defecation, it is also known as exania, prolapse of rectum, archoptoma, or tuō gāng. The pathogenic reasons vary, and the main reasons are collapse from Qi deficiency, or pathogenic fire accumulates in the stomach and intestine, swells and falls down.
