Zhang Xiao Niangzi, a renowned surgeon, lived during the Northern Song dynasty. She rose to prominence in the Jiayou period (1056–1063 CE). According to legend and historical records, she was young when an itinerant herbalist passed by her home and asked for a cup of water. Zhang Xiao Niangzi noticed that he was a venerable elder with a silver beard and a remarkably tolerant and benevolent demeanor; she invited him indoors, offered him a seat, prepared tea, and served him meals with great enthusiasm. Impressed by her intelligence, virtue, and diligence, the herbalist taught her secret medical knowledge—including surgical techniques and ointment preparation—and gifted her a manuscript of Yongju Yifang (The Unusual Prescriptions for Carbuncles).
