She practiced medicine during the Daoguang and Xianfeng reigns of the Qing Dynasty (early to mid-nineteenth century). As a distinguished gynecologist in her region, she earned deep respect from patients for her clinical skill and compassionate care.
Major Works and Academic Contributions
Gu Dehua authored Hua Yun Lou Yi An (Medical Cases from Flower Rhyme Pavilion), a seminal gynecological casebook containing 29 meticulously documented clinical cases—most involving critical or severe gynecological conditions. Her case analyses are thorough, objective, and clinically insightful, reflecting rich empirical experience rare among female physicians of her time. Zhang Yutian, a contemporary physician from the same county, transcribed and preserved the original manuscript. In 1921, the Shaoxing-based physician Qiu Jisheng compiled these transcripts into The Collection of Rare Medical Books, ensuring the survival and transmission of Hua Yun Lou Yi An to the present day.
