Caulis Polygoni Multiflori(Fleece-flower Stem).
Brief Introduction: The Herb Caulis Polygoni Multiflori is the dried lianoid stem of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb.(family Polygonaceae), used (1).as a heart-nourishing tranquilizer for treating insomnia and dream-disturbed sleep, (2).to activate blood circulation in collaterals for the treatment of aching limbs. The herb is commonly known as Caulis Polygoni Multiflori, Fleece-flower Stem, Shǒu Wū Ténɡ.
✵Common official herbal classics defined the herb Caulis Polygoni Multiflori(Fleece-flower Stem) as the dry stem and vine of the species (1). Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. It is a plant of the Fallopia Genus, Polygonaceae family of the Polygonales order. This commonly used species is introduced as:
(1).Polygonum multiflorum Thunb.: The Polygonum multiflorum Thunb., is a plant of the Polygonaceae family and Fallopia genus, it also known as "Fallopia multiflora(Thunb.) Haraldson", "Fo-Ti, Fleeceflower Root, Maltiflower Knotweed, Tuber Fleeceflower, Climbing Knotweed, Chinese knotweed, Flowery Knotweed, He-Shou-Wu", or Shǒu Wū, Hé Shǒu Wū, etc. The plant is a perennial vine. Roots slender ends into a hypertrophy root, the appearance of red-brown to dark brown. Stem base slightly woody, hollow. Leaves alternate; with long stems; stipules sheathing membranous, brown; leaf blade narrowly ovate or cordate, 4~8 cm long, 2.5~5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cordate, Dark green above, light green below, smooth and glabrous on both sides. Panicle. Petals pedunculate, base with membranous bracts; flowers small, green and white perianth, 5-lobed, varying in size, outside 3-winged; dorsal 8, unequal, shorter than perianth; 1 pistil, 3 stigma cracked, head-shaped. Achenes elliptic, 3-sided, black, shiny, outstrip persistent perianth, perianth 3-winged. Its flowering period is from August to October, fruiting from September to November.
Polygonum multiflora is a perennial plant. The tuberous root is thick, long elliptic, black-brown. Stem twining, 2~4 meters long, much-branched, longitudinally ribbed, glabrous, slightly scabrous, lower part lignified.
Leaves ovate or long ovate, 3~7 cm long, 2~5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cordate or subcordate, both surfaces scabrous, margin entire; Petiole 1.5~3 cm long; Stipules membranous, oblique, glabrous, 3~5 mm long.
Flowers: inflorescences paniculate, terminal or axillary, 10~20 cm long, branches spreading, with fine longitudinal edges, densely tuberose along edges; Bracts triangular-ovate, with small projections, apical apex acute, each bract with 2-4 flowers; Pedicels slender, 2-3 mm long, lower articular, fruit prolonged; 5 perianths, deeply divided, white or light green, perianth elliptic, size is not equal, outside 3 larger back wings, fruit when increased, perianth when shape nearly circular, diameter 6-7 mm; 8 stamens, lower filaments wider; 3 styles, very short, stigma capitate.
Fruit: achene ovate, 3-ribbed, 2.5~3 mm long, dark brown, glossy, enclosed in persistent perianth. Its flowering period is from August to September, fruiting from September to October.
Ecological environment: It grows in valley thicket, hillside forest, gully edge stone gap, at the area of altitude 200~3,000 meters. This species mainly distributed in East China, central China, southern China, provinces Hebei, southern Gansu, Guizhou, Zhongtiaoshan mountain of Shanxi, southern Shaanxi, Sichuan, Taiwan province, Yunnan and many other provinces.
Trait identification:The herb is long cylindrical, slightly twisted, branched, different length, diameter 4~7 mm. Surface purplish red to purplish brown, coarse, with twisted longitudinal wrinkles, nodes slightly enlarged, lateral branches, skin thin, exfoliate. Brittle, easy to break, cross-section cortex purple, wood part yellow-white or light brown, obvious catheter hole, pulp loose, off-white. No odor, taste slightly bitter and puckery.
