Radix Boehmeriae(Ramie Root).

 Radix Boehmeriae Brief Introduction: The Herb Radix Boehmeriae is the dried root of Boehmeria nivea(L.) Gaud.(family Urticaceae), used to arrest bleeding and prevent miscarriage for the treatment of bleeding in cases of threatened abortion and menorrhagia. The herb is commonly known as Radix Boehmeriae, Ramie Root, Zhù Má.

 ✵Common herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Radix Boehmeriae(Ramie Root) as the dried root or rhizome of the species (1). Boehmeria nivea(L.) Gaud. It is a plant of the Boehmeria Jacq genus, the Urticaceae family of the Urticales order. This commonly used species is introduced as:

 Boehmeria nivea L.Gaud (1).Boehmeria nivea(L.)Gaud.: It is commonly known as Zhù Má. Subshrubs or shrubs, 0.5~1.5 meters high; Stem upper and petiole densely spreading long hirsute and subspreading and appressed short strigose.

 Leaves alternate; Leaf blade grassy, usually round ovate or broadly ovate, rarely ovate, 6~15 cm long, 4~11 cm wide, apex abruptly acute, base sub truncate or broadly cuneate, margin dentate above base, slightly scabrous above, sparsely pubescent, underside densely covered with snowy white felted hair, lateral veins ca. 3 pairs; Petiole 2.5~9.5 cm; Stipules meristem, subulate lanceolate, 7~11 mm long, abaxially hairy.

 Boehmeria nivea L.Gaud Panicles axillary, or female above the plant, male below, or all-female of the same plant, 2~9 cm long; Male inflorescence 1~3 mm in diameter, with a few male flowers; Female inflorescence 0.5~2 mm in diameter, with most dense female flowers. Male flowers: 4 perianth slices, narrowly elliptic, ca. 1.5 mm long, connate to the middle, apex acute, outside sparsely pilose; 4 stamens, ca. 2 mm, anthers ca. 0.6 mm; Pistil narrowly obovoid, ca. 0.7 mm long, apex with short stigma. Female flowers: perianth elliptic, 0.6~1 mm long, apex with 2~3 denticulate, outside pubescent, fruiting rhomboid oblanceolate, 0.8~1.2 mm long; Stigma silk-shaped, 0.5~0.6 mm long.

 Achene subglobose, ca. 0.6 mm long, smooth, base abruptly contracted into slender stipitate. Its flowering period is from August to October.

 Boehmeria nivea L.Gaud Ecological Environment: It grows in the edge of valley forest or grassy slope, mountain flat, gentle slope, hilly or plain impact soil, 200~1,700 meters above sea level. It is widely cultivated in Yunnan, Gansu, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Taiwan, Hubei, Sichuan, Shaanxi. It also distributed in Laos and other area of Soutbeast Asia.

 Boehmeria nivea L.Gaud Trait identification: Dry roots irregularly cylindrical or slightly oblate, slightly curved, 6~10 cm long, 1~2 cm in diameter. The coat is grayish-brown and extremely coarse. There are raised root marks and many warty projections, and the skin is sometimes brown or tan and fibrous. Qualitative hard body light, cross-section fibrous, slightly silty, tender solid, sometimes visible in the middle several concentric ring grain, old hollow. Slight smell, light taste, slightly sticky when chewing. The herb which color is ash brown, strip even, the firm is better.

 Ramie is a unique Chinese crop mainly used for textiles. China's ramie production accounts for more than 90% of the world's ramie production. Ramie stem fiber long and thin, tough, white, shiny, tensile strength, moisture resistance, rich elasticity, and insulation, can be woven into aircraft wing cloth, rubber industry interlining, wire covering, incandescent lamp yarn, fishing nets, artificial silk, artificial cotton, and wool, cotton blend can be made of high-grade clothing; Staple fiber can be used as raw material for high-grade paper, rayon, carpet, gunny bag, etc.
