Brief introduction: The herb Cacumen Platycladi is the dried twig and leaf of Platycladus orientalis(L.) Franco(family Cupressaceae), used in the same way as a blood-cooling hemostatic for treating epistaxis, hemoptysis, hematemesis, hematochezia, and metrorrhagia, also used for treating premature graying of hair. The herb is commonly known as Cacumen Platycladi, Chinese Arborvitae Twig and Leaf, Cè Bǎi Yè.
Botanical source: Common herbal classics defined the herb Cacumen Platycladi(Ce Bai Ye) as the dry tip of branch and leaf(or the young shoots or young twig and leaf, or tip of branch and leaf) of the Cupressaceae family plant species (1). Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco. This commonly used species is introduced as:
(1).Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco.: Botanical description: The Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco., is a plant of the Cupressaceae family and Platycladus genus, it is commonly known as "Platycladus orientalis", or "Thuja Orientalis", or "Oriental Arborvitae", or "Chinese Arborvitae", or "Ce Bai", or "Xiang Bai, Huang Bai, Bian Bai, Bian Song, Bian Hui, etc.". Evergreen trees, grow up to 20 meters tall, with a diameter of 1 meter. The bark is thin, grayish-brown, sliver into strips. The branchlets are straight and flat. Leaves are scaly, alternating, 1~3 mm long, apex slightly obtuse, upper and lower sides of branchlets exposed to partially obovate-shaped rhomboid or oblique square, the leaves on both sides folded over the base of upper and lower leaves in a keel shape. There are glandular grooves in the middle of the dorsal lobe.
Monoecious; Bulb alone on top of the short branch; Male bulbs are yellow, ovoid, about 2 mm long. Globule fruit mature in the year, ovoid, 1.5~2 cm long, succulent, blue-green, white powder; Ripe wood, open, reddish-brown; Seed scales 4 pairs, flat, back near the apex of the inverted tip, central seed scales 1-2 seeds. Seeds ovoid or obovate, 4~6 mm long, grayish-brown or purplish brown, wingless or ridged, large and prominent umbilicus. Its flowering period is from March to April, the fruit ripens from September to November.
Herb trait: dry branches and leaves, different length, dense branches. The leaves are small, scaly, lying on flat branches, alternating, greenish-green. Branchlets are flattened, linear, brown. Brittle. Slightly fragrant, slightly bitter, slightly spicy. It is best to have tender, green leaves, and no broken leaves.
Ecosystem: The Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco. grows in moist and fertile land, also grows on limestone rocks, moist and fertile slopes. Geographical distribution: This species mainly distributes in most areas of China and is cultivated in most areas of China, except Qinghai and Xinjiang province. It widely distributes from the south of the northeast, passing through north China to the south of Guangdong and northern Guangxi, and west to Gansu, Shaanxi, southwest to Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou. This species was native to the northwest area of China. It is also now naturalized as an introduced species elsewhere in Asia: southward to northern Pakistan; and westward to northern Iran.
Ecological habit: The plant fond of light, slightly resistant to shade when young, adaptable, not strict to soil requirements, can grow in acid, neutral, lime, and light saline soil. Drought resistance, poor infertility, strong germination capacity, moderate cold resistance. Weak wind resistance.
Growth characteristics: The Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco., is a temperate positive species, cultivated and wild. Calcareous soils, which are moist, fertile, and well-drained, are resistant to cold, drought, and salinity, and can grow on flat land or cliffs. In dry, lean mountains, growth is slow and plants are thin. Shallow root, but well-developed lateral root, strong germination, long life, anti-smoke, anti-sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, and other harmful gases, widely distributes, it is one of the most commonly used ornamental trees in China.
Landscaping: The Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco., has an indispensable position in landscaping. It can be used for roadway, pavilion garden, both sides of the gate, around the green area, roadside flower beds, inside and outside of walls, all are very beautiful. Pharmacological actions: The decoction of the herb Cacumen Platycladi can significantly shorten the clotting time, and has an inhibitory effect on staphylococcus aureus, Mlicrococcus catarrhalis, Bacillus dysenteriae, beta streptococcus, and on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, influenza, herpes virus. The water decoction of Cacumen Platycladi, alcohol extract, and flavonoids have antitussive, expectorant, and antiasthmatic effects. The water extraction and alcohol precipitation agent can reduce blood pressure in cats.
Medicinal efficacy: Cooling blood, hemostasis(stanch bleeding), grow hair and black hair, relieve cough and expectorant, dispelling wind dampness, disperse swelling poison. It is indicated for hememesis(spitting blood), epistaxis(nose bleeding or bleeding from five aperture or subcutaneous tissue), hematemesis, hematuria(blood in urine), hemafecia(pass blood in stool), dysentery with bloody stool, uterine bleeding and unstoppable, hemorrhoidal hamorrhage, bacterial dysentery, rheumatic arthralgia, hypertension, cough, cough with excessive phlegm, erysipelas, mumps, scalds, blood heat and alopecia(hair loss), premature whitening of hair and beard, etc.
