Fructus Viticis(Shrub Chaste-tree Fruit).
Pin Yin Name: Màn Jīnɡ Zǐ.
English Name: Shrub Chaste-tree Fruit.
Latin Name: Fructus Viticis.
Property and flavor: slight cold, pungent, bitter.
Brief introduction: The herb Fructus Viticis is the dried ripe fruit of simple-leaved chaste tree, Vitex simplicifolia Cham., or three-leaved chaste tree, Vitex trifolia L.(family Verbenaceae), used for treating wind-heat affliction with fever and headache, acute conjunctivitis, blurred vision and dizziness. The herb is commonly known as Fructus Viticis, Shrub Chaste-tree Fruit, Màn Jīnɡ Zǐ.
Botanical source: The herb Fructus Viticis(Shrub Chaste-tree Fruit) is the dried ripe fruit of the (1). Vitex simplicifolia Cham., or (2). Vitex trifolia L., they are plants of the Vitex genus, the Lamiaceae or Labiatae(mint or deadnettle family) family of the Lamiales order. These 2 commonly used species are introduced as:
(1).Vitex simplicifolia Cham.: Botanical description: The Vitex trifolia L. var. simplicifolia Cham., is commonly known as "Simplicifolia Vitex", "Simple leaf Vitex", "Vitex rotundifolia L.", or "Dan Ye Manjing", deciduous shrubs, plant height is about 2 meters. The whole plant is gray-white pilose. The main stem squatted on the ground, the adventitious roots are often found on the nodes, the young branches are four-sided, and the old branches are nearly circular. Leaves opposite, shortly stipitate; leaf blade obovate to elliptic, apex obtuse, base cuneate, entire, 2.5~5 cm long, 1.5~3 cm wide, greenish surface, pink white abaxially; lateral veins ca. 8 pairs. Inflorescences terminal; calyx campanulate, apex 5-toothed; corolla lavender, apex 5-lobed, below 1 lobe largest, broadly ovate, with hairs on inside and below middle part; 4 stamens, extending outside corolla tube; ovary globose, dense glands, stigma split. Drupe spherical, the diameter is about 5-7 mm, with a place. Its flowering period is from July to August, fruiting from August to October.
Growth characteristics: The plant prefers to grow on beaches and lakeside, it is also cultivated.
Characters of herbs: The herb is spherical with a diameter of 4 ~ 6 mm. The surface is grayish-black or dark brown, covered by gray color powder frost fuzz, has 4 longitudinal shallow furrows, the apex is slightly concave, the base has the grayish-white persistent calyx and the short fruit peduncle. The calyx is one-third to two-thirds of the fruit with five teeth cleft, two of which are deep and densely covered with hairs. It is light, the texture is tough, not easily broken. 4 cells can be seen in the cross-section, with 1 seed in each chamber. Smells specific and aromatic, light flavor, light pungent.
Pharmacological actions: ①. Sedative and analgesic effect: apply for neurological headache, effective for hypertension. ②. Antipyretic effect: sedative temperature center. The aqueous solution of Fructus Viticis had an inhibitory effect on strain ECHO11 at 1:10 concentration. It has an obvious inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus giganteus. The 1:10 concentration of the decoction has an inhibitory effect on strain ECHO11.
Medicinal efficacy: Dispel wind and eliminate heat, clear head and eyes. Indicated for wind-heat cold and headache, gingival swelling and pain, red eyes, tears, dark eyes, and dim eyesight, dizziness, and giddiness.

Internally:5~9 grams(CP), or 2~3 qian(about 6~10 grams), water decoction; infusing in wine or prepare to pill, powder.Externally:mashed and apply stick(DCTM), or 6~10 grams,water decoction, or infusing in wine, or prepare to pill, powder.Externally:proper amount, wash with water decoction(CHMM).
(2).Vitex trifolia L.: Botanical description: The Vitex trifolia L., is commonly known as "Vitex trifolia", or "Manjing", deciduous shrubs, rarely small trees, 1.5~5 meters high, scented; branchlets quadrangular, densely pubescent. Usually three compound leaves, sometimes with single leaves on lateral branches, petiole 1~3 cm long; leaflets ovate, obovate or obovate-oblong, 2.5~9 cm long, 1~3 cm wide, blunt or mucronate, base cuneate, entire, surface green, glabrous or puberulent, abaxially densely grayish white hairs, lateral veins approx. 8 pairs, slightly raised on both sides, leaflets sessile or sometimes midvein base extending shortly. Inflorescences terminal, 3~15 cm long, peduncle densely gray-white tomentose; calyx bell-shaped, apically 5-lobed, outside fluffy; corolla lavender or bluish-purple, 6~10 mm long, outer and throat hairy, corolla tube densely villous, apical 5-lobed, 2-lipped, middle lobe is larger in lower lip; 4 stamens, protruding outside corolla; ovary glabrous, densely glandular; styles glabrous, stigma 2-lobed. Drupe subrounded, ca. 5 mm in diameter, black at maturity; fruit preserved, outer grayish tomentose. Its flowering period is in July, fruiting from September to November.
Growth characteristics: The plant grows near sea, beach, river, plain and village.
