Herba Pogostemonis(Cablin Patchouli Herb).
Brief Introduction: The herb Herba Pogostemonis is the dried aerial part of Pogostemon cablin(Blanco)Benth.(family Labiatae), used to resolve damp for treating nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, especially in cases of summer afflictions. The herb is commonly known as Herba Pogostemosis, Guǎnɡ Huò Xiānɡ.

It is a plant of the Pogostemon genus, the Lamiaceae family, Tubiflorae order. This commonly used species is introduced as:
(1).Pogostemon cablin (Blanco)Benth.: It is commonly known as Mentha cablin Blanco or Guǎnɡ Huò Xiānɡ. Perennial aromatic herbs or subshrubs. Stem erect, 0.3~1 meters tall, tetraphenous, branched, tomentose. Leaves rounded or broadly ovoid, 2~10.5 cm long, 1~8.5 cm wide, apex obtuse or acute, base wedge-shaped gradually tapering, margin with irregular crevices, grassy, dark green above, tomentose, sparse with age, below pale green, tomentose, lateral veins ca. Petiole 1~6 cm long, tomentose.
Inflorescences 10 to 20 flowered, lower slightly detached, densely ascending, 4~6.5 cm wide, 1.5~1.8 cm spikes, spikes terminal and axillary, densely long tomentose, pedicels 0.5~2 cm long, densely tomentose; Bracts and bracteoles linear-lanceolate, slightly shorter than calyx or nearly as long as calyx, densely tomentose. Calyx tubular, 7~9 mm long, long tomentose externally, shorter tomentose internally, dentate subulate lanceolate, about 1/3 as long as calyx tube. Corolla purple, ca. 1 cm long, lobes all outer hairy. Stamens exserted, bearded. Style apex subequal 2-lobed. Disc ring. It is flowering in April.
Ecological environment: the plant was native to the tropical Asia. It is widely cultivated in the Zhujiang river area, Hainan, and Taiwan of China. It also distributed in Sri Lanka and some other regions of Southeast Asia; It grows on hillsides or roadsides. The plant prefers high temperature, wet, sunny environment. The plant grows slowly when the temperature is below 17 ℃, the plant can withstand a short period of 0 ℃ low temperature. It could not bear dryness, also should avoid water. It is suitable to grow in loose, fertile and well-drained slightly acidic sandy loam.
Cultivation biological characteristics: the plant prefers high temperature and humid climate, the annual average temperature 24~25 ℃ is the most suitable for growth, the temperature lower than 17 ℃, the growth is slow, the plant can withstand 0 ℃ transient low temperature. Rainfall should be abundant and evenly distributed. Annual rainfall should be 1,600-2,400 mm. They are fond of sunshine, but they must be shaded properly at the seedling stage and the early stage of colonization. Branches are easily broken in a typhoon. It is advisable to cultivate sandy loam with loose, fertile soil and good drainage.
Trait identification: Stem is slightly square, much-branched, branches slightly tortuous, 30~60 cm long, 0.2~0.7 cm in diameter; Surface pilose; The quality is brittle, easy to break, cross-section central medulla; Old stem cylindrical, 1~1.2 cm in diameter, covered with taupe emboli. Leaves opposite, shriveled, oval or elliptic after flattening, 4~9 cm long, 3 ~7 cm wide. Both sides are covered with gray hairs; Apex shortly or obtuse, base cuneate or obtuse, margin with obtuse teeth of irregular size; Petiole slender, 2~5 cm long, pilose. It has a distinctive fragrance and a slightly bitter taste.
