Property and flavor: slight warm, pungent.
Brief introduction: The herb Herba Pogostemonis is the dried aerial part of Pogostemon cablin(Blanco)Benth.(family Labiatae), used to resolve damp for treating nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, especially in cases of summer afflictions. The herb is commonly known as Herba Pogostemosis, Guǎnɡ Huò Xiānɡ.

It is a plant of the Pogostemon genus, the Lamiaceae family, Tubiflorae order. This commonly used species is introduced as:
(1).Pogostemon cablin (Blanco)Benth.: Botanical description: It is commonly known as Mentha cablin Blanco or Guǎnɡ Huò Xiānɡ. Perennial aromatic herbs or subshrubs. Stem erect, 0.3~1 meters tall, tetraphenous, branched, tomentose. Leaves rounded or broadly ovoid, 2~10.5 cm long, 1~8.5 cm wide, apex obtuse or acute, base wedge-shaped gradually tapering, margin with irregular crevices, grassy, dark green above, tomentose, sparse with age, below pale green, tomentose, lateral veins ca. Petiole 1~6 cm long, tomentose.
Inflorescences 10 to 20 flowered, lower slightly detached, densely ascending, 4~6.5 cm wide, 1.5~1.8 cm spikes, spikes terminal and axillary, densely long tomentose, pedicels 0.5~2 cm long, densely tomentose; Bracts and bracteoles linear-lanceolate, slightly shorter than calyx or nearly as long as calyx, densely tomentose. Calyx tubular, 7~9 mm long, long tomentose externally, shorter tomentose internally, dentate subulate lanceolate, about 1/3 as long as calyx tube. Corolla purple, ca. 1 cm long, lobes all outer hairy. Stamens exserted, bearded. Style apex subequal 2-lobed. Disc ring. It is flowering in April.
Ecological environment: The plant grows on hillsides or roadsides. The plant prefers a high temperature, wet, sunny environment. The plant grows slowly when the temperature is below 17 ℃, it can withstand a short period of 0 ℃ low temperature. It could not bear dryness, also should avoid water. It is suitable to grow in loose, fertile, and well-drained slightly acidic sandy loam. The plant was native to tropical Asia, it distributes in Sri Lanka and some other regions of Southeast Asia. In China, it distributes in the Zhujiang river area, Hainan, and Taiwan.
Cultivation biological characteristics: the plant prefers high temperature and humid climate, the annual average temperature 24~25 ℃ is the most suitable for growth, the temperature lower than 17 ℃, the growth is slow, the plant can withstand 0 ℃ transient low temperature. Rainfall should be abundant and evenly distributed. Annual rainfall should be 1,600-2,400 mm. They are fond of sunshine, but they must be shaded properly at the seedling stage and the early stage of colonization. Branches are easily broken in a typhoon. It is advisable to cultivate sandy loam with loose, fertile soil and good drainage.

Characters of herbs: Stem is slightly square, much-branched, branches slightly tortuous, 30~60 cm long, 0.2~0.7 cm in diameter; Surface pilose; The quality is brittle, easy to break, cross-section central medulla; Old stem cylindrical, 1~1.2 cm in diameter, covered with taupe emboli. Leaves opposite, shriveled, oval or elliptic after flattening, 4~9 cm long, 3 ~7 cm wide. Both sides are covered with gray hairs; Apex shortly or obtuse, base cuneate or obtuse, margin with obtuse teeth of irregular size; Petiole slender, 2~5 cm long, pilose. It has a distinctive fragrance and a slightly bitter taste.
Pharmacological actions: ①.The herb Herba Pogostemonis has a bacteriostatic effect. Patchoulenone in vitro has an obvious inhibitory effect on fungi such as Leucidium albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans and Rhizopus nigricans, and also has a certain inhibitory effect on bacteria such as alpha-hemolytic streptococcus. The fresh juice of Pogostemon cablin leaves also has a certain inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus alba, and Bacillus subtilis. Its fresh juice ear drops can treat acute experimental guinea pig external otitis caused by staphylococcus aureus. Patchoulenone can inhibit the growth of penicillium and other molds and can be used in oral liquid anticorrosive. ②.Calcium antagonism: The water extract of Herba Pogostemonis can significantly inhibit the colonic zone contraction induced by high potassium in isolated guinea pigs, indicating that it has calcium antagonism. The active ingredient is Patchouli alcohol, which has dose-dependent antagonism.
Medicinal efficacy: Aromatics and eliminating turbidness, aromatic and eliminate dampness, appetizing and preventing vomiting, relieving exterior syndrome and relieving summer-heat. It is indicated for turbid dampness obstructing in the middle-energizer, vomiting of epigulosis, loss of appetite, heat dampness and tiredness, chest tightness and uncomfortable, chest tightness and nausea, cold dampness and heat stroke, abdominal pain and diarrhea, vomiting, diarrhea, nasosinusitis(acute and chronic sinusitis), headache, cold and heat headache caused by exogenous heat dampness, fever and drowsiness at the onset of damp-warm syndrome, tinea of hand and foot, etc.
