Brief introduction: The herb Rhizoma Typhonii is the dried tuber of Typhonium giganteum Engl. (family Araceae), used as (1).an expectorant for a cough with profuse phlegm, and (2).an anticonvulsive for epilepsy or tetanus.
Botanical source: The herb Rhizoma Typhonii(Giant Typhonium Tuber) is the dried tuber of Typhonium giganteum Engl., it is a plant of Typhonium genus, the Araceae family of the Alismatales order. It is also known as Rhizoma Typhonii, Giant typhonium rhizome, Bái Fù Zǐ.

(1).Typhonium giganteum Engl.: Botanical description: Perennial herbs, often tall. The subterranean tuber is like taro, ovoid to ovoid oval, outside is dark brown small scales. 1~7 leaves(related to age); Petiole hypertrophy fleshy, the lower part is often pale pink or purple stripe, up to 40 cm; Leaf blade triangular-ovate, halberd-shaped arrow or ovate-shaped broadly elliptic, 10~40 cm long, 7~30 cm wide, initially curled inward like an Angle, then developed, apex acuminate. Pedicels drawn from tubers, with red patches between greens; Tubules purplish red, cylindrical or oblong-ovate, apex acuminate and curved, eaves ovate, up to 15 cm; Inflorescence of fleshy spike located in the bud of Buddha, about 14 cm long; Female inflorescence and neutral inflorescence each about 3 cm long; Male inflorescence about 2 cm long; Appendage cylindrical, erect, ca. 6 cm long, purplish, not protruding from buddha spout; Male flower golden yellow, stamen has 2 anthers, drug chamber top hole crack; Neutral linear, pendulous, pale yellow; Female flowers brownish-red. Berries are red when ripe. Its flowering period is from June to August, fruiting from July to October.
Ecological environment: the plant grows in dank forest, mountain stream, gully, and cropland. Resource distribution: It distributes in the south of latitude 42 degrees north, including the southern part of Xizang. Besides, it also distributes in the middle and lower reaches areas of the Yangtze River, and other areas of China.
Growth characteristics: The plant grows under forests or in damp places in gullies.
Characters of herbs: tuber ovoid or elliptic, 2~5 cm long, 1~3 cm in diameter, apex residual stem or bud trace. Surface white or light yellow slightly smooth, ring and dot shape very mark. Hard, cross-sectional white silty. No smell light, spicy tongue thorn. The herb with big, qualitative and solid, color white, powder content sufficient is good.
Pharmacological actions: The herb has analgesic, sedative, anti-convulsion, antibacterial, anti-tetanus toxin, anticancer action, can relieve cough and expectorant, inhibit tuberculosis bacilli, but also can reduce serum cholesterol.
Medicinal efficacy: Reduce wind phlegm, calm the frightened and convulsion, detoxify and eliminate stagnation, analgesic. Indicated for the treatment of phlegm obstructing stroke, headache with phlegm syncope, migraine headache and aching all over the head, pharyngitis(inflammation of the fauces and pharynx), and pharyngalgia, tetanus, external for scrofula and superficial nodule, poisonous snake bite, etc.
