Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam(Bamboo Shavings).
Brief Introduction: The herb Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam is the dried shavings of the stem of Bambusa tuldoides Munro, Sinocalamus beecheyanus(Munro)McClure var.pubescens P.F.Li, or Phyllostachys nigra var.henonis Stapf(family Gramineae), used to clear heat, resolve phlegm, induce tranquilization and arrest vomiting for relieving cough or insomnia due to phlegm-heat, and vomiting due to stomach heat. The herb is commonly known as Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam, Bamboo Shavings, Zhú Rú.
✵The herb Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam(Bamboo Shavings) is the dried shavings of the stem of Bambusa tuldoides Munro, Sinocalamus beecheyanus(Munro)McClure var.pubescens P.F.Li, or Phyllostachys nigra var.henonis Stapf., they are plants of the Bambusa Retz. corr. Schreber genus, the Gramineae family of the Graminales order.
Common official herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Concretio Silicea Bambusae(Tabashir) as the dried shavings of the stem of:(1). Bambusa tuldoides Munro, (2). Sinocalamus beecheyanus(Munro)McClure var.pubescens P.F.Li, or (3). Phyllostachys nigra var.henonis Stapf. These 3 commonly used species are introduced as:
(1).Bambusa tuldoides Munro.: It is also known as Dan Zhu, or Light Bamboo. Plants lignified, arboreal. Rod is 6~18 meters high, 5~7 cm in diameter, green after growth, or gray-green when old, rod rings and sheath rings are prominent. Sheath abaxially glabrous or distally hirsute, yellowish-green to yellowish with grayish-black spots and streaks; Sheath ear and tassel are easy to shed. Sheath leaves long lanceolate, wrinkled, base constricted; Small technique with 1~5 leaves, leaf sheath mouth glabrous; Leaf blade dark green, glabrous, narrowly lanceolate, 1~2 cm wide, subveined 6~8 pairs, thin. Spikelets arranged into imbricate panicles; Spikelets containing 2~3 flowers, or 2 apical flowers degenerated-spikelets, lanceolate, with minute hairs; Lemma acute, surface hairy; Lemma apex 2-toothed, hairy, 12~15 mm long; Scales vary in number, 3 to 1 or absent, thorium-shaped, ca. 3 mm long. Anthers 7~10 mm long when flowering, with very long filament hanging over the flowers; Ovary is pointed ovate, terminal give birth to a long-form style, both total length about 7 mm, 3 stigmas, each length about SMM, like a brush. Bamboo shoots from April to May, flowering from October to May.
Ecological environment: Bamboo is usually planted in gardens. Bamboo mainly distributes in the middle and south of the Yangtze river basin.
(2).Sinocalamus beecheyanus(Munro)McClure var.pubescens P.F.Li.: It is also known as Qing Gan Zhu, or Green Stem Bamboo. Plants lignified, arboreal. Plants fasciculate, without the thorn. Rod erect or suberect, up to 15 meters, ca. 6 cm in diameter. The tip is not bent, and the nodes of the rod are more branched; Internodes cylindrical, internodes and sheath of rod smooth glabrous.
Ecological environment: Green bamboo grows in flat ground, hills. Green bamboo mainly distributes in the Zhujiang river area of China, and it is now introduced and cultivated in other areas.
(3).Phyllostachys nigra var.henonis Stapf.: It is also known as Da Tou Dian Zhu. Plants woody, arboreal. The pole is 15 meters high. Somewhat zigzag, young rod hairy and usually hairy rings on rod nodes below the middle, internodes usually shorter; The back of sheath is sparsely black-brown, appressed before life. The base of the release tablet is narrower. Long release tongue, about 5 mm long; Spikelets are usually straw yellow; Palea dorsal pilose, ridge with longer dense margin hairs. Leaf-sheaths are usually hairy; Leaf tongue longer and lemma abaxially sparsely pilose. Its flowering period is from March to May, bamboo shoots from June to July.
Ecological environment: Phyllostachys nigra var.henonis Stapf. grows on the hillside, flat road. This species mainly distributes in the Zhujiang river area of China.
Trait identification: this herb is irregular filamentous or thin ribbon, often curled and twisted into a group or flower shape, different length, 0.5~0.7 cm wide, 0.3~0.5 cm thick. All pale yellow-white, light green, cyan yellow, grayish-yellow, yellowish-green, yellow and tough, elastic. The smell is slightly fragrant and slightly sweet.
