Medulla Junci(Common Rush).

Medulla Junci Pin Yin Name: Dēnɡ Xīn Cǎo.
 English Name: Common Rush.
 Latin Name: Medulla Junci.
 Property and flavor: slight cold, sweet, tasteless.

 Brief introduction: The herb Medulla Junci is the dried pith of Juncus effusus L.(family Junaceae), used (1).to induce diuresis for treating heat stranguria, and (2).to calm the mind for relieving fidgetiness and insomnia. The herb is commonly known as Medulla Junci, Common Rush, Dēnɡ Xīn Cǎo.

 Juncus effusus L. Botanical source: Official herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Medulla Junci(Common Rush) as the dried pith of the species (1).Juncus effusus L. It is a plant of the Juncus L. genus, the Juncaceae family of the Liliflorae order. This commonly used species is introduced as:

 Botanical description: It is commonly known as Dēnɡ Xīn Cǎo. Perennial herb, 40~100 cm tall. Rhizome horizontal walk, dense hair root. Stems clustered, erect, slender columnar, 1.5~4 mm in diameter, indumescent with milky pulp, a large part of the stem. Leaf-sheath reddish-brown or pale yellow, up to 15 cm long; Leaf degeneracy is spiny. Inflorescences pseudolateral, cymose, flowery, dense or diffuse; Bracts 5~20 cm long in connection with stem; Flowers pale green, with short stalks, 2~2.5 mm long; 6 perianth segments, striate lanceolate, arranged in 2-wheel, outer wheel slightly longer, margin membranous, abaxially pilose; 3 stamens or rarely 6, about 2/3 of perianth long, anthers slightly shorter than filaments; 1 pistil, ovary superior, 3-locule, style very short 3 stigmas. Capsule oblong, apex obtuse or concave, ca. As long as perianth or slightly longer, with 3 intact septa. Seeds numerous, ovoid oblong, brown, ca. 0.4 mm long. Its flowering period is from June to July, fruiting from July to October.

 Juncus effusus L. Ecological environment: The plant grows in wet places, such as water and field. It distributes in the lower reaches of the Yangtze river and northwest, southwest area of China.

 Growth characteristics: The plant Juncus effusus prefers a humid environment, resistant to cold, avoid drought. Its requirement of soil conditions is not strict, but it is advisable to choose moist, fertile and loose soil for cultivation.

 Characters of herbs: The herb is thin cylindrical, up to 90 cm, 1~3 mm in diameter, white or yellowish-white surface. Under the magnifying glass, there are fine ridges and spongy pores. Slightly shiny. Light soft, elastic, easy to break, section uneven, white. The smell is not noticeable. Long, thick, white and elastic. Microscopic identification of stem pulp cross-section: all composed of aerenchyma. Each cell is square or rectangular, with several branches. The branches are 8~60 microns long, 7~20 microns in diameter, and 1.7 microns in wall thickness.

 Pharmacological actions: The experiment proved that the herb Medulla Junci has diuretic and hemostatic effects.

 Medicinal efficacy: Clear heart fire, clear away the heart-fire and down bear fire, prompt diuresis, alleviate water retention, prompt diuresis and treat stranguria. It is indicated for upset insomnia, infantile night cry, oliguria and difficulty pain(less urine and difficulty in urination, pains), edema, dysuria(difficulty in micturition), gonorrhea, dampness heat jaundice, pharyngitis(throat obstruction), mouth and tongue sores, trauma, etc.
