Introduction: Herbs Digestives and Evacuants: also known as digestant herbs, an agent or substance that aids digestion to eliminate accumulated undigested food, also known as digestant and evacuant herbs.

Semen Raphani(Radish Seed).
Brief Introduction: The herb Semen Raphani is the dried ripe seed of garden radish, Raphanus sativus L.(family Cruciferae), used (1).to improve the digestion and direct Qi downward for the treatment of food stagnation with abdominal distension and pain, and (2).to resolve phlegm for cough and dyspnea with profuse expectoration. The herb is commonly known as Semen Raphani, Radish Seed, Lái Fú Zǐ.
✵Common official herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Semen Raphani(Radish Seed) as the dried ripe seed of garden radish, Raphanus sativus L. It is a plant of the Raphanus genus, the Brassicaceae family of the Brassicales order. This commonly used species is introduced as:
Raphanus sativus L.: It is commonly known as turnip radish, turnip, Luó Bo. Herbs biennial or annual, 20~100 cm tall; Succulent taproots, oblong, spherical or conical, green, white or red rind; Stem branched, glabrous, slightly pinkish. Basal and lower cauline leaves large pinnately cleft, 8~30 cm long, 3~5 cm wide, apex lobes ovate, lateral lobes 4~6 pairs, oblong, obtuse, sparsely hirsute, upper leaves oblong, serrate or nearly entire.
Racemes terminal and axillary; Flowers white or pink, 1.5~2 cm in diameter; Pedicels 5~15 mm long; Sepals oblong, 5~7 mm long; Petals obovate, 1~1.5 cm long, purplish, lower with 5 mm long claws.
Fruit cylindrical, 3~6 cm long, 10~12 mm wide, constricted between seeds, forming spongiform septum; Tip beak 1~1.5 cm long; Stem 1~1.5 cm long. 1~6 seeds, ovate, slightly oblate, ca. 3 mm long, reddish-brown, finely reticulate. Its flowering period is from April to May, fruiting from May to June.
Ecological environment: It is produced all over China, and mainly produced in middle to lower reaches area of the Yellow River, the lower reaches area of the Yangtze River, and other areas.
Trait identification: This herb dry seeds elliptic or subovoid but slightly flattened, ca. 3 mm long, 2.5 mm wide. Surface is reddish-brown, a number of vertical grooves on one side, one end has a kind of umbilicus, brown round point shape protrusion. When viewed with a magnifying glass, all have dense reticulations. Hard, yellow-white or yellow seed kernels can be seen after breaking open; Have oily. No smell, sweet taste, slightly pungent. The herb which is big grain, full, oily is better.
