Flos Caryophylli(Cloves).

Flos Caryophylli Pin Yin Name: Dīnɡ Xiānɡ.
 English Name: Cloves.
 Latin Name: Flos Caryophylli.
 Property and flavor: warm, pungent.

 Brief introduction: The herb Flos Caryophylli is the dried flower-bud of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb.(family Myrtaceae), used (1).to warm the stomach for the relief of vomiting and hiccups due to cold, and (2).to warm the kidney for treating impotence. The herb is commonly known as Flos Caryophylli, Cloves, Dīnɡ Xiānɡ.

 Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. Botanical source: Official herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Flos Caryophylli(Cloves) as the dried flower-bud of (1). Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. It is a plant of the Eugenia(Tetradium) Genus, the Myrtaceae family, Myrtaceae order. This commonly used species is introduced as:

 Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. (1).Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb.:
 Botanical description: It is commonly known as Dīnɡ Xiānɡ. Evergreen trees, up to 10 meters high. Leaves opposite; Petiole conspicuous; Leaf blade oblong-ovate or oblong-obovate, 5~10 cm long, 2.5~5 cm wide, apex acuminate or acute, base narrow often spreading into sessile, entire. Flowers fragrant, terminal cymes, flowers ca. 6 mm in diameter; Calyx hypertrophic, greenish later purplish, long tubular, apex 4-lobed, lobes triangular; Corolla white, slightly mauve, short tubular, 4-lobed; Stamens mostly, anthers longitudinally cleft; Ovary inferior, united with calyx tube, style thick, stigma inconspicuous. Berry reddish-brown, oblong-elliptic, 1~1.6 cm long, 6~8 mm in diameter, apex persistent sepal. Seed rectangle.

 Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. Ecological environment: The tree is cultivated in Guangdong, Guangxi and other areas of China, it also distributes in Malay islands.

 Growth characteristics: The plant Eugenia caryophyllata prefers a tropical island climate. Young trees are shade-loving and can not stand the scorching sun and grow slowly. Adult trees prefer light, need sufficient sunshine to bloom early, bloom more. Fear of cold, afraid of waterlogging, not resistant to wind, should choose deep soil, fertile, good drainage, pH5.0-6.0 sandy loam for cultivation.

 Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. Characters of herbs: Dried flower buds slightly short club-shaped, 1.5~2 cm long, reddish-brown to dark brown. The lower part of calyx tube terete slightly flat, 1~1.3 cm long, 5 mm wide, 3 mm thick, base tapering, surface rough, carved with oil exudation, calyx tube upper end with 4 triangular thick calyces. Upper part nearly spherical; Ca. 6 mm in diameter, with 4 petals, clasped together. Open the buds, showing most stamens, filaments curving toward the center, with a stout erect style in the center. The quality is solid and heavy, sink into water namely; Section has oily, with fingernail delimit visible oily ooze. Strong aroma, pungent taste. With big, brawny, bright violet-brown, intense aroma, oil is better.

 Pharmacological actions: Orally taken the herb Flos Caryophylli can promote gastric juice to secrete, improve digestion, relieve nausea and vomiting, alleviate abdominal flatulence, it contains eugenol which has local anesthesia and analgesic effect, the water extract or alcohol extract of Flos Caryophylli has anesthesia and killing effect on pig tapeworm, inhibitory effect against bacteria and pathogenic fungus, in vitro, clove has an inhibitory effect on influenza virus PR8 strain.

 Medicinal efficacy: Warm the middle and calm the adverse-rising energy, warm the kidney, invigorate the kidney and supporting Yang. It is indicated for deficiency of spleen and stomach, hiccup and vomiting, poor appetite vomiting and diarrhea, regurgitation, diarrhea and dysentery, cold and pain in the heart and abdomen, epigastric cold and pain, kidney deficiency and impotence, cold in the waist and knees, dorsal furuncle, hypochondnrium or abdominal mass, hernia, tinea, etc.
