Rhizoma Phragmitis(Reed Rhizome).
Brief Introduction: The herb Rhizoma Phragmitis is the fresh or dried rhizome of Phragmites communis(L.) Trin.(family Gramineae), used (1).to clear heat and promote fluid production in cases of high fever with thirst, (2).to evacuate pus for treating lung abscess, and (3).to arrest vomiting in cases of stomach heat. The herb is commonly known as Rhizoma Phragmitis, Reed Rhizome, or Lú Gēn.
✵The herb Rhizoma Phragmitis(Reed Rhizome) is the fresh or dried rhizome of Phragmites communis Trin., it is a plant of the Phragmites Adans. Genus, the Gramineae family of the Poales order.

(1).Phragmites communis Trin.: It is commonly known as reed, perennial tall herb, 1~3 meters tall. Underground stem is thick, crosswalklk, hollow, there are shoots on the section. Stem erect, hollow. Leaves are in 2 rows, alternate; Leaf-sheath cylindric, leaf tongue hairy; Leaf blade flat, 15~45 cm long, 1~3.5 cm wide, margin rough. Spikes arranged into large panicles, terminal, 20~40 cm long, slightly pendulous, lower pedicel with white pilose; Spikelets usually have 4~7 flowers, 10~16 cm long; The first flower is usually male, the glume lanceolate, unequal, the first glume half or less of the second glume; Lemma longer than palea, smooth spreading; Bisexual flowers, 3 stamens, 1 pistil, 2 styles, stigma feathery. Caryopsis elliptic, separated from palea. Its flowering and fruiting period is from July to October.
Ecological environment: It grows in shallow water on the banks of rivers and ponds. Resource distribution: It is distributed in most areas of China.
Trait identification: fresh rhizome is long cylindrical, some slightly flat, different length, diameter 1~2 cm. The surface is yellow and white, shiny, and the skin is loose and can be peeled off. The nodes are circular with residual roots and bud marks. It is light, tough and not easily broken. The broken face is yellow-white, hollow, 1~2 mm thick, with holes arranged in a ring. No smell, sweet taste. The stems are long cylindrical compressed. The surface is shiny, yellow and white. The nodes are hard, red and yellow, with longitudinal wrinkles between the nodes. It is light and flexible. No odor, mild taste. The herb which is thick, yellow and white, shiny, no root is better.
