 Brief introduction: The herb Folium Apocyni Veniti is the dried leaf of red dogbane, Apocyman venetum L.(family Apocynaceae), used for suppressing hyperactive liver yang, clearing heat and inducing diuresis. The herb is commonly known as Folium Apocyni Veneti, Dogbane Leaf, or Luó Bù Má Yè.

 Botanical source: The herb Folium Apocyni Veniti(Dogbane Leaf) is the dried leaf of Apocyman venetum L., it is a plant of the Apocynum. Genus, the Apocynaceae family of the Gentianales order.

 Apocyman venetum L. (1).Apocyman venetum L.:
 Botanical description: The plant is commonly known as Red Dogbane, or Luo Bu Ma. Subshrubs, it grows up to 1~1.5 meters tall, moist, glabrous. Branches are purplish red or reddish. Leaves are opposite, elliptically lanceolate to oblong, 1~8 cm long, 0.5~2.2 cm wide, apex obtuse, apex small, base broadly cuneate, margin inconspicuously serrate. Cymes are terminal; Calyx 5 deeply lobed, shortly hairy; Corolla is pink, light purplish red, bell-shaped, apex 5-lobed, two mask granular processes; 5 coronas; 5 stamens; 2 carpels, free. Bony processes and fruiting. Seeds tip is covered with long white hairs. Its flowering period is from June to August, fruiting period is from September to October.

 Dogbane Leaf Ecological environment: The plant grows in riparian sandy areas, gully sandy areas, rocky hillsides, saline-alkaline areas. The plant distributes in the north, northwest, northeast area of China.

 Growth characteristics: The plant grows on the banks of sandy land, gully sand land, rocky hillside, saline-alkali land.

 Characters of herbs: Its character is many crinkles, some are broken, complete those who show elliptic shape lanceolate or ovoid lanceolate, light green or gray-green, the brim is provided serrate, often reflexed, leaf vein is raised at subsurface. Petiole is slender, ca. 4 mm. Very brittle. Slight smell, mild taste.

 Pharmacological actions: ①.Antihypertensive effect: After the administration of apocyman leaf decoction on renal hypertensive dogs for 2 hours, the blood pressure decreased from 25.9/18.9 kPA to 20.3/13.3 kPA, and remained stable at a low level for 3 days before recovering. ②.Cardiac strengthening effect: The Canadian glucoside contained in apocyman root can increase the systolic amplitude and slow the heart rate in vitro and orthostatic cat heart, followed by arrhythmia and finally cardiac arrest in systolic phase. Its action nature and speed are similar to that of strophanral, and central inhibitory medicine such as pentobarbital sodium can weaken its cardiac strengthening effect.

 Medicinal efficacy: Calm the liver and relieve uneasiness of mind, clear heat and alleviate water retention, reduce blood pressure, strengthen heart, diuretic. It is indicated for liver-Yang dizziness, palpitation, insomnia, edema and lack of urine, hypertension, neurasthenia, nephritis edema.
