Flos Eriocauli(Pipewort Flower).

Eriocaulon beurgerianum Koern Pin Yin Name: Gǔ Jīnɡ Cǎo.
 English Name: Pipewort Flower,Buerger Pipewort Flower.
 Latin Name: Flos Eriocauli.
 Property and flavor: neutral, pungent, sweet.

 Brief introduction: The herb Flos Eriocauli is the dried flower-head with the stalk of Eriocaulon beurgerianum Koern.(family Eriocaulaceae), used to dispel wind and heat for the treatment of acute conjunctivitis, nebula, and headache. The herb is commonly known as Flos Eriocauli, Pipewort Flower or Gǔ Jīnɡ Cǎo.

 Botanical source: The herb Flos Eriocauli(Pipewort Flower) is the dried flower-head with the stalk of Eriocaulon beurgerianum Koern., it is a plant of the Eriocaulon Linn. Genus, the Eriocaulaceae family of the Poales order.

 Botanical description: Annual herbs, leaves clustered, linear-lanceolate, 8~18 cm long, 3~4 mm wide in the middle, apex slightly obtuse, glabrous. Flower stems numerous, clustered, up to 25 cm long, sheath simple, upper oblique lobed; Inflorescence hemispheric, 5~6 mm in diameter, involucral bracts obovate, bracts membranous, cuneate, upper abaxially and margin densely with white stick-shaped short hairs; Flowers unisexual, in bract axils, male and female peanuts in the same inflorescence, with short pedicels; Male flowers few, in the center of inflorescence, sepals united into Buddha flame bract, obovate, lateral dehiscence. Apex 3-lobed, margin with short hairs; Petals united into an inverted conical tube, apex 3-lobed, lobes ovate, with 1 black gland above, 6 stamens, anthers round, black; Female flowers numerous, around inflorescence, rarely pedicellate, 3 petals, free, spatulate oblanceolate, inner surface with 1 black glands, thick; Ovary 3 locules, each with 1 ovule, stigma 3 lobed. Capsule 3-lobed. The flowering and fruiting period is from June to November.

 Ecological environment: The plant grows in wet areas near paddy fields or ponds. The plant distributes in the middle and lower reaches area of the Yangtze River, the Zhujiang river area, southwest, Taiwan, and other areas of China.

 Eriocaulon beurgerianum Koern Characters of herbs: The character is a flower stem head. Inflorescence oblate, 4~5 mm in diameter; Involucral bracts at base are scaly pale yellow, closely arranged discoid; 30~40 florets, pale, closely arranged, with white powder on the surface; After rubbing with the hand, you can see most small black grains and gray-green seeds. Inflorescence below a slender flower stem, about 15~18 cm long, yellow-green, shiny; Soft, not easily broken. Smelly, tasteless, long chew into a ball. Large and tight beads, pale white, short stems, yellowish-green, no roots, leaves and impurities are preferred.

 Pharmacological actions: The aqueous extract of Flos Eriocauli has a different degree of inhibitory effect on the Odouin Bacillus spp and the Rust-colored Trichomycetes in the test tube. The water infusion solution of Flos Eriocauli also has an inhibitory effect on dermatophytes such as Acrothesium floccosum(Epidermophyton floccosum), Microsporum lanosum, Microsporum gypseum, and other dermatophytes. The effective concentration is 1:320, but the effect on pneumococcus and Escherichia coli is weak.

 Medicinal efficacy: Dispels wind and eliminate heat, brighten eyes and removing nebula, indicated for nebula, night blindness, headache, toothache, pharyngitis(obstruction in throat) and nosebleed epistaxis.
