Semen Euryales(Gordon Euryale Seed).
Brief Introduction: The Herb Semen Euryales is the dried kernel of the ripe seed of Euryale ferox Salisb.(family Nymphaeaceae), used as an astringent for the treatment of chronic diarrhea, spontaneous emission, enuresis, and leukorrhagia. The herb is commonly known as Semen Euryales, Gordon Euryale Seed, Seed of Gordon Euryale, Qiàn Shí.
✵Common official herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Semen Euryales(Gordon Euryale Seed) as the dried kernel of the ripe seed of the species (1). Euryale ferox Salisb.It is a plant of the Euryale Salisb. ex DC. Genus, the Nymphaeaceae Salisb. family of the Ranales order. This commonly used species is introduced as:
(1).Euryale ferox Salisb.: It is commonly known as Qiàn. Large annual aquatic herbs. Submerged leaves arrow-shaped or ellipsoid, 4~10 cm long, without spines on both sides; Petiole without spines; Leaves leathery, elliptic reniform to rounded, 10~130 cm in diam., shield, with or without curvature, entire, purplish below, pubescent, acute prickles on both sides at veins branches; Petiole and pedicel stout, up to 25 cm long, with hard spines.
Flowers ca. 5 cm long; Sepals lanceolate, 1~1.5 cm long, purple on the inside, slightly curved stiffly prickly on the outside; Petals rectangular circular lanceolate or lanceolate, 1.5~2 cm long, purplish-red, arranged in several rounds, gradually becoming stamens inward; Style absent, stigma red, stigma disk concave. Berry globose, 3~5 cm in diam., purplish red, densely prickly; Seed globose, 10 mm in diameter, black. Its flowering period is from July to August, fruiting from August to September.
Ecological environment:It grows in ponds and lakes. Produced in the north and south provinces of China.
Growth habit: Gordon euryale is fond of warmth and sunshine, but it is not resistant to cold or drought. The optimum growth temperature is 20-30℃ and the water depth is 30~90 cm. Suitable in the water surface is not wide, water fluidity is small, the water source is sufficient, can adjust the level of water, easy to drainage and irrigation ponds, reservoirs, lakes and lake lakeside. Soil rich in organic matter is required. Seed reproduction.
Trait identification: Seed kernel class round ball, diameter 5~8 mm, some broken into blocks. The whole body has an inner coat of reddish-brown or dark purple, with irregular vein-like reticulations, and one end is about 1/3 yellow-white. The embryo is small. Located in a circular recess at the yellowish end. The texture is hard, cross-section white, powder like. No smell, no taste. The herb which is full, cross-section white, powder content is sufficient, do not have broken fine powder is better.
