Brief Introduction: The Herb Limonitum is brownish iron ore, mainly composed of basic iron oxide[FeO(OH)], used as an astringent for the treatment of chronic diarrhea or dysentery, menorrhagia, and leukorrhagia. The herb is commonly known as Limonite, Yǔ Yú Liánɡ.
✵Common official herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Limonitum(Limonite) as brownish iron ore which mainly composed of basic iron oxide[FeO(OH)]. This commonly used mineral is introduced as:
Brownish iron ore: Limonite, amorphous. Often become a grape shape, kidney shape, breast shape, block shape, soil shape and so on aggregate. The color is brown to black, if be earthy, it is russet or yellow. The streaks are yellowish-brown. Semi-metallic or earthy luster, sometimes of silk. Opaque. The cross-section is crust-like or soil-like. The hardness is 1~5.5, the proportion is 3.6~4.0.
Ecological environment: It is mainly composed by the iron ore containing oxidation decomposition, and then by hydrolysis collection and deposition. The main production areas are middle reaches area of the Yellow River, the lower reaches area of the Yangtze River.
Trait identification: this herb assumes ovoid tuberculous shape, have a core or hollow, but integrity is rare; Usually the shell is separated from the core, and the shell is broken into irregular residual square blocks or flat blocks, with different sizes and thickness. Surface more uneven; Khaki, tawny and brown; Rough inner surface, with yellow powder; Weight quality is firm, but can be smashed, section layer shape, color and luster is different, earthy yellow, brown, purple brown, gray and blue; Each layer thickness is not equal, general brown layer or purple-brown layer is the thickest.
