Semen Oroxyli(Trumpetflower Seed).

Oroxylum indicum  Pin Yin Name: Mù Hú Dié.
 English Name: Trumpetflower Seed.
 Latin Name: Semen Oroxyli.
 Property and flavor: cool, bitter, sweet.

 Brief introduction: The herb Semen Oroxyli is the dried ripe seed of Oroxylum indicum(L.) Vent.(family Bignoniaceae), used to clear the lung of heat, and soothe the throat for the treatment of cough, sore throat, and hoarseness of voice in cases of wind-heat afflictions.

 Botanical source: The herb Semen Oroxyli(Trumpetflower Seed) is the dried ripe seed of Oroxylum indicum(L.) Vent., it is a plant of Oroxylum. Genus, the Bignoniaceae family of the Scrophulariales order. It is also known as Trumetflower Seed, Seed of Trumetflower or Mù Hú Dié.

 Oroxylum indicum L. Vent.01 Common official herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Semen Oroxyli(Trumpetflower Seed) as the dried leaf of:(1). Oroxylum indicum(L.) Vent. This commonly used species is introduced as:

 (1).Oroxylum indicum(L.) Vent.:
 Botanical description: Wood trees, 7~12 meters tall. The bark is thick and lenticular. Branchlets are very much lenticellate and protuberant, leaf mark is apparent and big. Leaves opposite; Large odd-numbered two to four pinnate compound leaves, inserted near apex of stem, 60~160 cm long, 20~80 cm wide; Leaflets numerous, petiole 5~10 mm long, leaf blade triangular-ovate, 6~14 cm long, 4~9 cm wide, apex shortly acuminate, base rounded or broadly cuneate and blique, entire, green above, light green below, both surfaces glabrous, blue when dry. Racemose cymes terminal, 40 ~ 150 cm long, pedicels ca. 7 cm; Calyx campanulate, 2.2~4.5 cm long, 2~3 cm wide, purple, truncated, persistent; Corolla orange-red, fleshy, 3~9 cm long, bell-shaped, 5~8.5 cm in diameter, apex 5-lobed, lobes unequal; 5 stamens, inserted in the middle of corolla tube, extending out of the corolla; Filaments base woolly, 1 filaments shorter; Disk lei, fleshy; Style 5~7 cm long, stigma 2 pieces dehiscent. Capsule woody, flat, broadly linear, pendulous, 40~120 cm long, 5~8.5 cm wide, apex shortly acute, base cuneate, margin slightly recurved, with a slightly protruding dorsal slit in the middle, brown at maturity, opening along the abdominal suture, fruit flap with midrib. Seeds most, seeds even wing 6~7.5 cm long, 3.5~4 cm wide, except the base, all surrounded by white translucent thin wings. Its flowering period is from July to October, fruiting period is from October to December.

 Oroxylum indicum L. Vent.01 Ecological environment: The Oroxylum indicum tree grows on slopes, streams, valleys, or shrubs below an elevation of 1,000 meters above sea level. Resources distribution: The tree mainly distributes in the Zhujiang river area, southwest, Taiwan, and other areas of China.

 Growth characteristics: The tree grows on slopes, streams, valleys, or bushes below an elevation of 1000 meters above sea level.

 Characters of herbs: Seeds are subelliptic, flaky, 2~3 cm long, 1.5~2 cm wide. The surface is light yellow and white, with silk luster. The seed coat extends outwardly into a broad wing with a width of about 2.5 cm, which is membranous and translucent, radially textured, with multiple broken edges. The body is light, peeled the seed skin, thin-film-like endosperm tightly stuff cotyledon. 2 cotyledons, flat butterfly-shaped, yellowish-green or light yellow, the long diameter is about 1.5 cm, the short diameter is about 1 cm; Radicles are obvious. The smell is slight and the taste is bitter. The herb which is large, white, shiny, wings are soft as silk is preferred.

 Pharmacological actions: The seed and stem skin contain baicalein, it has an anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic reaction, diuresis effect, choleretic effect, cholesterol-lowering effect. The seeds and stem skins contain chrysin, which has cytotoxic activity against human nasopharyngeal carcinoma(KB) cells, and half of the effective amount is 13 mg/mL.

 Medicinal efficacy: Clearing away the lung-heat and relieve sore throat, dispersing stagnated liver Qi for regulating stomach. Indicated for a cough with lung heat, pharyngitis(throat obstruction), hoarseness, Qi pain in liver and stomach(stomachache due to emotional depression and the hyperactive liver-Qi attacking the stomach).
