Semen Hyoscyami(Henbane Seed).

 Hyoscyamus niger Brief Introduction: The Herb Semen Hyoscyami is the dried seed of Hyoscyamus niger L.(family Solanaceae), used (1).to relieve cough and in cases of asthma for bronchial asthma, (2).to relieve gastralgia, and (3).to induce tranquilization. The herb is commonly known as Semen Hyoscyami, Henbane Seed, Tiān Xiān Zǐ.

 ✵The herb Semen Hyoscyami(Henbane Seed) is the dried seed of the Hyoscyamus niger L., it is a plant of the Hyoscyamus L. genus, the Solanaceae family of the Solanales order. It is also known as Henbane Seed. This commonly used species is introduced as:

 Hyoscyamus niger L. (1).Hyoscyamus niger L.: Biennial herb, it grows up to 1 meter tall, all mucinous glandular hairs. Roots are stout, fleshy, and later fibrous, about 2~3 cm in diameter. Stems are very short, rosette from the rhizome, ovate-lanceolate or oblong-rectangular, up to 30 cm long, up to 10 cm wide, apex acute, margin coarsely dentate or pinnately lobed, main veins are flat and wide, side veins 5~6 straight to the tip of lobes, broad and flat pterygoid petiole, base semi-clasped rhizome; Spring stem elongation, branching since the second year, the lower gradually lignification, cauline leaves are ovate or triangular-ovate, apex obtuse or acuminate, without petiole base half amplexicaul or broadly cuneate, margin pinnate is a shallow crack or deep crack, to the top of the stem lobe shallow wavy, lobes are triangular, apex blunt or sharp-pointed, two sides have gland hairs along veins and there is soft hair, 4~10 cm long, 2~6 cm wide.

 Hyoscyamus niger L. Flowers are solitary in leaf axils below the middle stem, solitary in bract leaf axils at the upper stem, and clustered into a scorpion raceme, usually sessile, subsessile, or with very short pedicels. The calyx is tubular campanulate, with fine glandular and villous hairs, 1~1.5 cm long, 5 lobed, lobes are slightly unequal, accreta after flowering, the base is rounded, 2~2.5 cm long, 1~1.5 cm in diameter, 10 longitudinal ribs, lobes are open, apex needle-shaped; Corolla campanulate, about twice as long as calyx, yellow and violet veined; Stamens slightly extending corolla; The ovary is about 3 mm in diameter. The capsule is enclosed in persistent calyx, long ovoid, 1.5 cm long, 1.2 cm in diameter. Seeds are nearly disc-shaped, 1 mm in diameter, yellowish-brown. Summer blossoms and bears.
